Susie Whitaker is currently the USD 343 district librarian. She has an Associates Degree of Liberal Arts from Carteret Community College in Morehead City, North Carolina, a Bachelors of Education from Washburn, and a Masters of Library Science from Emporia State University. Mrs. Whitaker had her first real teaching job at Perry Lecompton and in 2005 became the high school Library Media Specialist.

The District Library Media Specialist has many tasks. Mrs. Whitaker works with all students and staff in the USD 343 district. She is in charge of purchasing books and materials, helping students find books they like, helping students develop good literacy skills, and promoting a safe and efficient use of technology.

Mrs. Whitaker is also the sponsor of the Perry Lecompton Travel Club. This is not an official club at PLHS, but most travelers are PLHS students and parents.  They travel with EF tours and visit a variety of places in Europe. The next trip is to Germany, the Alps, and Prague.

Mrs. Whitaker has been married for 43 years to her best friend. Her husband served for 22 years in the United States Marine Corps, where they traveled coast to coast-spending many years in North Carolina.  She has four children and eight grandchildren.

Outside of school Mrs. Whitaker, loves reading, spending time with her family, and traveling to new places.

"I have always wanted to be a teacher, ever since I lined up my cousins at age 5 and told them we were going to play school.  I enjoy working with students and watching them "get it" as they finally master a difficult task, or listening them tell me all about a story they read-ALL BY THEMSELVES!  It is the most rewarding profession.  Since I have such a love of literature and technology, migrating to the library media center was just automatic for me.  I was able to combine the two things I loved most, reading and technology, into the perfect job for me.  I love that I am able to share my love and passion for reading and technology with all of the students of our district.  It makes me feel like I am helping them become better citizens and effective learners in this digital world we live in."
